here's a critic's choice from peter margasak about the show:

Last year Chicago drummer Frank Rosaly released a homemade three-CD set of solo music called Milkwork (Molk), where he used real-time processing and blurts of electronic noise to buffett and caress intricate, fluid patterns and grooves played on drum kit, gongs, and tuned metal bowls. Recently Rosaly told me he deemed the set a failure, and though I don’t agree, I certainly don’t mind that he’s trying again. A new disc called Milkwork is due in January on Contraphonic (he’ll have copies at this show), and in its neatly structured improvisations he focuses more closely on polymetric exploration, a la Milford Graves and Jerome Cooper, using his hands and feet independently to hold down as many as four different rhythmic threads—some metered, some with only a pulse, and some with neither. In the record’s latter half especially, Rosaly leans on his electronic rig—a combination of contact microphones, oscillators, effects pedals, and analog synths—to trigger squiggly figures and long tones that intersect with his drumming. Tonight he’ll play a solo set and then join a new quintet called Oxbow for a set of his compositions; its lineup also includes vibist Jason Adasiewicz, bassist Jason Roebke, and clarinetists Jason Stein, James Falzone, and Keefe Jackson, all on different horns. Josh Abrams spins. —Peter Margasak

"
Can't you hear this beer-drowned bar conversation among audiophiles? "We should call all the experimental musician cats around town and form a music collective. Yeah, avant-garde aficionados would really dig it." Then reality strikes. "Organizing musicians to do something? Shitballs! Want another round?" A similar experience occurred for Jennifer Rogers and Marvin Scott, the co-founders of the Phoenix Creative Music Movement. However, they avoided the morning-after hangover and successfully created the PCMM as a synergistic outlet for creative musicians to meet and perform. Since April, the bimonthly concert series has featured improvised music ranging from free jazz and organic hip-hop to a found-object collage of white noise and a fracas drum act where children's toys were played. The first PCMM Festival will feature six acts over two nights, including Chicago drumming heavyweight and Phoenix native Frank Rosaly, who employs a "deconstruction" solo percussion style to illustrate a free-flowing patchwork of sound. This music is as far-reaching as can be, but if there is a PCMM guarantee, it's this: You ain't gonna hear these hip sounds on local popcorn jazz radio stations, dig? tues. oct. 4th, 9pm @ the hungry brain's phrenology festival of improvised music with the andrew d'angelo, jim baker and anton hatwich here's a little critic's choice about andrew's performance tonight: ANDREW D'ANGELO One of the most mercurial musicians in New York's jazz scene, reedist Andrew D'Angelo has made a virtue of unpredictability. He knows how to play it (relatively) straight--he's done stints with Boston groups like Either/Orchestra and Orange Then Blue--but since moving to New York in 1986 he's expanded his range. He can still swing like a mofo alongside someone like drummer Matt Wilson, but in his work with Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson he pursues an interest in electronic music and noise. Still, I wasn't prepared for the maelstrom he kicked up with his trio Morthana on last year's self-titled disc. Backed by two Norwegian musicians, electric guitarist Anders Hana and drummer Morten Olsen, D'Angelo tears into a scalding upper register on both bass clarinet and alto saxophone, wielding the instruments like scythes over the band's assaultive rhythms and slashing chords. Morthana wouldn't sound out of place on a bill of brutal prog, but the group is less interested in anal-retentive precision and showy virtuosity than in drawing blood. For this show on the closing night of the annual Phrenology Fest (click here for schedule), D'Angelo will be joined by a less confrontational local trio: keyboardist Jim Baker, bassist Anton Hatwich, and drummer Frank Rosaly. But the intensity, if not the volume, of their improvisations ought to be just as powerful. Opening are Mwata Bowden with Darius Savage and Avreeayl Ra and local group Herculaneum. " --Peter Margasak

he wire magazine's festival @ the empty bottle with MANDARIN MOVIE ...also performing, my man DIVERSE and red krayola here's an article from bill meyer about it: Empty Bottle's festival an adventure in disparity By Bill MeyerSpecial to the Chicago TribunePublished September 18, 2005Adventures In Modern Music is not Chicago's biggest or longest-lived musicfestival. But the event, which is sponsored by an English music magazinecalled The Wire and takes place Wednesday through Sunday this week at theEmpty Bottle, might be its most diverse and exciting. The Empty Bottle, which began hosting live music in 1993, has survivedstaging everything from visceral, beer-breathed garage rock to delicate, abstract improvised music while similar venues such as Lounge Ax have shuttheir doors. The Wire has covered everything you can find on the Bottle'sstage (and more), so it makes sense that two such well-establishedinstitutions in different countries would join forces."We were interested in associating ourselves with The Wire out of respect,as fans," explains Peter Toalson, the Empty Bottle's program coordinator."And The Wire has been important to me personally, as I've always admiredtheir adventurous editorial coverage and overall inclusiveness."When I began working at the Empty Bottle, I had always hoped to shift ourpresentation program to cover music in much the same way The Wire does.Rather than be an indie rock club with a jazz night, I have -- taking cuesfrom the magazine -- envisioned a program that focused on a wide variety ofgenres, and then tried to present the very best offerings from each of thosegenres."A perfect marriageToalson made the leap from emulation to association early in 2003, when hecontacted the magazine's publisher and editor-in-chief, Tony Herrington."He e-mailed me asking if we would be interested in hosting a Wire festivalat the club," Herrington wrote in an e-mail from the Wire's London office."Of course we were already familiar with [the Empty Bottle] as a venue thathad an international reputation for putting on all kinds of very coolunderground or experimental sounds. He offered to do all the legwork, allthe booking and administration, and to underwrite the whole event. All wehad to do was put together a list of names of musicians and groups we'd liketo see on the bill, and provide a few contacts. In the circumstances, itwould have been dumb not to say yes."Such straight talk illustrates part of what draws readers, who are oftenmusicians as well as fans, to The Wire. "I don't read a lot of magazines,"says Miles Seaton, who plays bass in Akron/Family, a winsome, off-kilterfolk-rock quartet that will play Thursday night. "But I read The Wire morethan most."The selection of performers for each festival starts with a wish list."Pretty much anyone who's in the office when I'm typing the thing up is freeto throw ideas into it," Herrington says, "and we then send that to Pete andhe gets to work putting the bill together. As things progress he'll addnames to the lineup, so the final bill is very much a co-curated affairbetween us and the club. There is no grand overarching theme, other than topresent stuff we like, and that goes some way to representing the range ofmusic we cover."`Outsider' emphasisAdds Toalson, "I try to make sure that the participating artists share acertain `outsider' aesthetic, something that both the Empty Bottle and TheWire feel is of some significance. I feel it is important that the festivalmake a statement about contemporary music, and that it offer a wide samplingof `outsider sounds' as a way of demonstrating the very breadth, scope andspirit of the underground music community."This year's lineup is indisputably broad; a fan of any given particularmusicians on a particular night is likely to encounter something they'venever heard before. The first night, for example, includes local rappersDiverse; Mandarin Movie, an ensemble led by cornet and computer player RobMazurek, a former Chicagoan who updates Miles Davis' baleful mid-'70sjazz-funk by blasting it with digitally generated noise; and the RedKrayola, a 39-year-old rock band fronted by Texas-born art professor MayoThompson. Some performers, such as Four Tet, who use records and computers toseamlessly blend folk melodies, jazz horns and hip-hop beats, meritinclusion because their music synthesizes a multitude of styles and ideas.Still others take a singular concept to an extreme. Earth, a Seattle-basedheavy-metal band that once featured Kurt Cobain as a guest vocalist, playsits riffs so slowly that they become massive, immovable walls of sound.Phill Niblock, a seventysomething composer and filmmaker from Manhattan, gets a similar effect using different means; he constructs pieces bylayering multiple recordings of a single instrument playing long tones, andhe plays the finished recordings at such a high volume that they generatedense clouds of writhing overtones. One of the Adventures in Modern Music festival's most appealing features isthe way it uncovers connections between drastically dissimilar musicians. Atfirst glance, jazz bassist Henry Grimes' propulsive, densely knottedimprovisations and composer William Basinski's slowly evolving loops havenothing in common. But both men make music that deals eloquently, ifindirectly, with loss. In the '60s, Grimes was one of the most in-demandsidemen in jazz, but he has only resumed playing and recording in the pasttwo years after a 30-year layoff imposed by poverty and health issues. Thejubilation that comes from overcoming such hardship suffuses his recentplaying.Basinski's CD "The Disintegration Loops" was made in 2001 by playingsynthesizer duets with tapes that he originally recorded two decadesearlier; when he replayed them, the metal flaked off the tapes so that theycould never be played again. He dedicated the resulting music, which wasborn from decay, to those who died in the World Trade Center, which stoodone mile from his house and collapsed two weeks after the session. Grimesand Basinski will share Friday night's bill with solo sets by Lungfishsinger Daniel Higgs and German techno musician Isolee. For another musician, the festival affords an opportunity to collaboratewith local musicians. Harris Eisenstadt is a drummer and composer who hasworked on both the East and West Coasts. Speaking by telephone from Toronto, where he was celebrating his 30th birthday with his parents, Eisenstadtsaid, "While I've been fortunate to find people to work with in both L.A.and New York, there's definitely a sense that everybody there is too busy toget together.Merger of music"In Chicago, despite the fact that everyone is working at a very high level, there's a welcoming and warmth that I really appreciate." His The Soul AndGone band, which plays on Thursday, uses jazz as a framework to containAfrican motifs, rock textures and moments of chamber music interplay. It'sthat inclusiveness that makes him fit on the same bill with the quartetAkron/Family."What I enjoy about The Wire is that they are not afraid to put differentmusic under the rubric of Modern Music, whatever that is. I mean, Ravel ismodern music!"Adventures in Modern Music runs Wednesday-Sunday at the Empty Bottle, 1035N. Western Ave. Tickets are $15 per event, $60 for a limited five-day pass. For information, call 773-276-3600.
